The Traditional Sugarcane Industry

  • Sugarcane processing has been refined over the years but has not changed fundamentally in more than a century.

  • Conventional crushing consumes a significant amount of energy yet only 10% of the total cane crop is utilized.

  • Bagasse is a mixture of crushed rind, pith, wax, sugar and other extraneous matter that is not economically possible to segregate. As a result, it has limited value other than as low-grade fuel or for non-structural interior grade bagasse board.

  • In traditional mills, cane is often burned in the field to remove excess leaves and debris before harvesting. As this creates pollution and destroys the cane’s valuable epidermal layer, Tilby Technologies has developed its own detrashing system.
